Visits & Presentations
We love doing presentations, readings and workshops at schools, bookstores, book fairs, libraries, literacy events, conferences – wherever! We enjoy motivating children and grown ups alike to read and write more, as well as use their talent to do good.
Our rates are reasonable, and travel expenses can be kept to a minimum with enough lead time. We are based in the Seattle area, but are willing to travel for appearances. We like scheduling multiple visits in the same area so that the travel expenses can be shared by different area schools. A fee schedule is available upon request.
All Such A Silly Baby visits can be arranged through Chronicle Books. To arrange for Steffanie to speak to your group about her Art with Heart books, please make arrangements through Art with Heart directly.
We do not carry inventory nor do we handle book orders. You can obtain books directly from the publishers (Chronicle or Art with Heart Press) or make arrangements with your local bookstore. Publishers like approximately six weeks to fulfill your order.
PRESENTATIONS FOR STUDENTS
Any of these presentations can be tailored to a 1st through 5th grade audience in assembly or small group settings. We are happy to talk with you about customizing our presentation to fit your classroom objectives.
Guided Story-Invention Workshop: Using theater games, students will learn how to develop plot, characters, as well as conflict to create their own silly stories. This workshop helps encourage and motivate reluctant writers.
Student Authors: Using Creative Genius Story Bags (each filled with different story elements – characters, plots, and settings), we inspire students to think “outside the bag” and create their own silly story.
How a Story Grows: We show the process of creating a book, demonstrating how stories evolve from scribbles on scrap paper to a manuscript to illustrator sketches to galleys and finally into a beautifully illustrated hard-bound book. It helps students learn about the editing process and how little changes can make a big difference.
Behind the Scenes: Richard and Steffanie take older students on a journey through the writing process. Where do ideas come from? Why are scraps of paper important? Why revise? How does a book get published? Does a rejection letter spell DOOM? We end with an improvisational revision game with time for questions, book sales and autographs. During shorter sessions with younger students, we engage them in role play with animal sounds and motions.
The Author’s Story: We will talk about what books inspired us in childhood as well as read some of our grade-school writing. We will talk about our education and how important writing was to us as students, as well as adults. We will highlight things that currently inspire us too: our child, pets, things that make us laugh, and hobbies. We will then interview the students to find out what they love and what funny stories they may have. Together, we will write a classroom story.
