Oodles of Doodles
In 2000, Steffanie heard about a little girl named Hallie. Hallie had been diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer, when she was only 12 months old. When Steffanie hear about her through a mutual friend, she was five and still struggling for her life. Inspired to do something for children like Hallie, but frustrated over many thwarted attempts to help, she went to sleep and had a dream that became the impetus for Oodles of Doodles.
Created especially for hospitalized children, Oodles was designed to help reduce boredom and fear as well as inspire creativity. The original book featured artwork by 97 different illustrators, including Mary Grand Pré, famous for her art for the Harry Potter books. Each illustrator donated their time and effort to the Art with Heart project. Subsequent printings needed to be trimmed down because of cost factors, but has helped over 28,000 children across North America so far.
The spirit, creativity, and commitment that define this important work is truly inspiring and continues to delight and inspire children who are bedridden, turning a difficult time into what it should be…a childhood.
Oodles has been endorsed by the Make A Wish Foundation, the Starlight Starbright Foundation, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Society for Arts in Health Care. Visit our website for more information. It is also available in Spanish for those who wish to help Hispanic-Latino children and ensure cultural competency and sensitivity.
And best of all, 100% proceeds help children in crisis! If you have a favorite children’s hospital, purchase books on their behalf and donate them.

Some Feedback…
“When I’m in pain, I go through the book and it gets my mind off the pain and helps me relax and have fun. I put the pictures around my room to remind me that when I am sad, I can look at them and they take my mind off things. This is a good thing for other kids because it’s creative and gets you thinking and feeling better.” ~ 11 Yr. Old Surgical Patient, Children’s Hospital, Seattle
“After opening Oodles, I immediately saw how amazing it was and quickly donated all other activity books to the playroom… In the all too familiar sterility of a hospital room, the beautifully created images from Oodles created a beautiful escape from the reality of illness into one of imagination and future hopes and dreams.” ~ Stephanie, mother of Patrick, 10-year-old leukemia patient
“This book made me feel happy, it is so fun. Everything is so cool. I had 18 surgeries and when I got this book, I was in the bed. It took the pain away while I was doing it. It is so cool. I wish I had another one, cause I am already done with it.” ~ Victoria, Age 15, Louisiana
“This isn’t simply a collection of coloring pages and connect-the-dots. The heart of the activity book lies within its ability to make children exercise their imagination. The beauty of the book lies not only within its artwork and design, but more importantly, in its emotional impact. The book makes it a point not to dwell on illness, as there is not one mention of being sick anywhere in the book. Rather, the children are asked to think about their aspirations, personal attributes and strengths.” ~ C-Ville Weekly, Virginia
